Guernsey Masters International Swim Meet 19th to 21st April 2013

A group of Redhill and  Reigate Masters Swimmers recently took the trop over to the beautiful island of Guernsey to take part in this popular swim meet.

It was the largest group of swimmers we have had attend being seven ladies and two men. We also had three supporters who came along so it made a really pleasant weekend.

There were a few highlights to the weekend, most important is our lovely Jim Green gaining two British Records in the breaststroke.  It is an amazing atmosphere when you have a large amount of people shouting and whistling and calling his name while swimming for the record.  There were many from other clubs who went out of their way to congratulate him.  Everyone is so supportive.  I hope when I reach the young age of 85 I can still climb onto starting blocks (even if I have to use a team mates shoulder to lean on as I climb up) and dive in!

It was great that we had enough members to enter relays, and we used Jim’s young age to put in a mixed freestyle 240 team where we came second.

We also just about scraped in a 240 ladies freestyle team, which we entered as non scoring but were disqualified as we used a swimmer from our other 200 team to make up numbers (this had been cleared before hand but not communicated to referees)

The lovely lady who took on the task of swimming twice was Lorna Ball who was attending her very first swim meet and was so cool and collected and just went wherever she was asked.

There were quite a few medals gained by the team, and some good PBs.

A full set of results can be seen at http://guernseyswimming.com/2013/04/ocs-masters-meet/

The weekend ended with a dinner at a local hotel with presentations of awards. Jim did not attend the dinner but was awarded a lovely watercolour picture in recognition of record breaking at poolside before he left.

For any masters who have never attended a meet, have a look at the results and see for yourself that there is such a wide spectrum of talent that no one should worry about taking part.

The Surreys are taking place on 8th June so let’s get more people out supporting the club.

21st Guernsey International Masters Swim Meet

A team of seven swimmers from Redhill and Reigate Masters went over to Guernsey last weekend to take part in the annual swim meet organised by the Guernsey Swimming Club. This was the largest team to turn out for our club for a few years.

There were some good results over the weekend with five members coming away with medals. This was a really amazing as the weeks leading up to the meet, nearly every member of the team had some sort of injury and had not put in the training they would have liked.

One member who was able to attend this year was Jenny Bass who was unable to come last year as she was very poorly but after a long recovery she made her return to the pool and came away with two gold medals and was part of the ladies individual medley relay team which was placed 3rd.

Helen Dempsey is a new member of our club and took part in her first ever competition and took home two bronze medals in her age group swims.

Our one and only male competitor, Martin Heron maintained his record of gaining the most medals by taking three golds, two silver and a bronze.

The two other medal winners were Brenda Hallpike and Jo Read, Brenda did very well despite the fact she had a fractured bone in her foot and had not put in any training for the last couple of weeks.

Although they did not come away with medals this year, Tricia Wright and Denise Anderson came along and represented the club, which is what we all sign up to do when we join the club.

We have Yvonne Barrows, the master’s coach to thank for some great improvements in performances. The recent sessions on starts and turns enabled Denise to do a personal best in the 400 freestyle by 9 seconds!

Many thanks to the two supporting husbands especially Martin Hallpike who was on poolside with his camera filming and replaying our races and taking some stunning shots of our turns!!

Let’s have even more people over there next year, I am sure if you ask any member of the team they will tell you what a fantastic weekend we all had.

Brenda Hallpike and Jo Read at Jersey swim meet 27th to 29th September 2013!

Brenda Hallpike and Jo Read represented Redhill Masters over in Jersey on the weekend of 27th to 29th September.

This was a really friendly and welcoming meet and a good crowd of like minded swimmers. Both Brenda and Jo managed to gain medals with Brenda coming home with One Gold two silver and one Bronze. Jo got two silver and two bronze.

There was a nail biting finish to Brenda's 200m backstroke where it appeared to all watching that she go the final touch over her long time rival, Christine Goodair of Kings Cormerants but when the times came up she had lost out by just 2 hundredths of a second.

After the competition there was an excellent meal at a local restaurant and many of the swimmers attended.

This would be a really good meet for our Masters to attend, especially those who like to do open water events, as these are run on the Sunday, with distances of 1km 3km and 5km.

See you all  over there next year!!

21st Guernsey International Masters Swim Meet 20th to 22nd April 2012

A team of seven swimmers from Redhill and Reigate Masters went over to Guernsey last weekend to take part in the annual swim meet organised by the Gurensey Swimming Club. This was the largest team to turn out for our club for a few years.

Eastbourne Masters Open Gala 15th May 2011

Only three members of RRSC masters attended this meet but it turned out to be fairly successful. Martin Heron entered five events and gained medals in all of them, 2 golds and 3 silver. Julia Dawe managed to get a bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

Jo Read managed to better her times from the ones she did in Guernsey. Most surprising was that out of 27 teams, some of them with up to twenty competitors RRSC Masters came 7th!! 20 teams scored lower points than us. Not bad for three swimmers!!

The Surreys are coming up soon. Lets get a bigger team out. Come and give it a go - it is not scary!

Masters 3 day event in Guernsey 8th, 9th and 10th April 2011

Four members of the Redhill and Reigate Masters have just returned from the Guernsey Masters International Swim Meet.

This is a really good meet full of friendly people and is very well organised.

It starts off on the Friday evening where there is always a rush to get in the pool for the warm ups and to get a feel for the pool. All four members of the team took part that evening. Martin Heron took part in the 200m Freestyle and gained a bronze. Jo Read, Denise Anderson and Tricia Wright competed in the 400m Freestyle and Tricia managed to get a PB in this race.

The next session was on Saturday morning with the 100m Freestyle for all the team, Martin managed a silver for this. Saturday afternoon is free to explore the delights of Guernsey, and then it is back Saturday evening for session 3.

Tricia did the 50m Breaststroke and then the 200m Freestyle while Jo and Denise competed in the 200m Freestyle. It was Martin’s turn for the 400m this evening where he gained silver yet again.

After a late meal out in town, and a few little drinks, it was back to the pool early Sunday morning for the last session. Tricia did the 100m individual medley, Martin the 100 Backstroke, and 50m Freestyle and Jo and Denise the 50 Freestyle.

Although it was just Martin who won the medals in all the races he took part in, all four of us really enjoyed taking part. It is great to see there are people of all abilities that compete, and it was great to be at a swim meet that at least 4 World Records were broken. These were by Jane Asher, from Kings Cormorants, who has just gone up to the 80 to 85 age group and can still put in amazing times and can beat swimmers a lot younger than her.

We were missing a member of the team this weekend, and that was Jenny Bass who is very poorly at the moment and she was greatly missed by the team. We all raised our glasses to wish her a speedy recovery and hope she will be joining us out there next year along with any other members of the masters who want to have a great weekend and support our club.

Surrey Masters Meet 27th June 2009

Six members of Redhill and Reigate Masters Swim team went over to Elmbridge Pool for the Surrey Masters Competition on Saturday 27th June. It was a long day with the format the same as last year with the three sessions. The first session started at 12.45pm and it wasn’t long before we got our first medal. That was a silver for Jo Read in the 200m freestyle. The next event was the 50m Breaststroke for ladies where Julia Dawe taking part in her first gala for Redhill won a Gold and Jenny Bass also took gold in her age group.

Next event was the mens 50m breaststroke in which Martin Heron was awarded a bronze and Dave Willsher, who was also having his debut swim for Redhill gained a silver. The morning session ended with all the team members taking part in the 50m freestyle and all coming away with a medal.

RRSC2009Surreys

After a break for lunch it was back to the pool for session two. Dave Willsher was first up in the individual medley and won a silver. Then it was down to Jenny and Julia again in the individual medley to bring home more medals. During this session the team was joined by masters captain Sarah Williams who swam in the 100 Backstroke. More success came for Dave in the 100 backstroke and the 50m fly and for Martin also in the 50 fly. At the end of this session it was time for the first relays. The ladies went first with 100 m medley relay but were not successful in gaining a medal but in the mixed relay which was next event up the team of Sarah, Martin, Dave and Jo had a nail biting fight for 1st place against much more experienced teams winning by just 3 hundredths of a second.

After another break it was time for the last session. Dave, Julia and Jenny all got medals in the 100 breaststroke and in the 50 backstroke Martin, Dave and Sarah all got medals. The last individual event was the 100 freestyle where Jenny, Jo, Sarah, Martin and Dave all got medals. The last two events were the freestyle relays. The Redhill ladies managed to gain silver here but success came again for the mixed freestyle team who yet again snatched gold away from six other teams with a time of 58.91.

This was a very successful meeting for Redhill Masters. Every member who attended came away with medals and both Dave and Jenny were awarded the Victor Ludorum trophies for most points gained in their age groups.

Guernsey International Swim Meet 3, 4 and 5 April 2009

On 3 April 2009 five members of Redhill & Reigate Swimming Club Masters attended the International Swim Meet in Guernsey. The competition lasted over the whole weekend with the first events being on the Friday evening. All the team took part on Friday evening starting with Martin Heron in the 200m Free, where he gained a silver medal. Next was Jenny Bass in the 100m Breaststroke who was also awarded a silver medal. Jo Read, Tricia Wright and Denise Anderson took part in the 400m Free. Tricia managed a personal best in this event.

On Saturday morning all four ladies swam in the 100m Freestyle. No medals were awarded, but Denise had a really good swim and got a personal best. Martin also took part in the 100m Free and 50m Butterfly and gained a silver in both events.

After an afternoon break with everyone going off to chill out and explore the island, it was back to the pool for the evening session. Jenny and Martin both got silver in the 50m Breaststroke and Martin yet again got another silver in the 400m Free with a time that he had not achieved for many years.

The final session was on Sunday morning where there were two golds won. The first was for Jenny with a really great 100m Individual Medley and the other was for Martin's 50m Freestyle.

After the competition all the swimmers who took part attended a three course lunch at a local hotel where top swimmers were awarded prizes and records were announced.

Bracknell Masters Open - 7 March 2009

Four Masters swimmers from Redhill and Reigate Swimming Club travelled to the open meet at Bracknell on the 7th March. Jenny Bass had a really good day taking away medals in every event she entered. She was very pleased with her 100 individual medley in which she achieved a much better time than she had entered.

Sarah Williams took part in the 50m and 100m Freestyle and the 100m Backstroke. Although she did not receive any medals for these events she also gained a better time than entered in the backstroke. Clive Chandler had a disappointing swim in the 100m breaststoke, but a much better time in the 50m butterfly.

Jo Read saw the benefits of increased training and took bronze in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle gaining times that she had not achieved in two years.

Many thanks to coaches Yvonne and Tina for their hard work in running the Masters training sessions.

Eastbourne Masters Open Gala - Sunday 1 June 2008

On Sunday 1st June the masters section of Redhill & Reigate Swimming Club competed in the annual Eastbourne Open Gala at the Sovereign Centre. We took seven swimmers from the club and achieved no less than seven personal best swims. Particular mention should go to Denise Anderson who smashed her previous best times in both the 50m and 100m freestyle by five seconds and over half a minute respectively. Tricia Wright swam exceptionally well in the 100m freestyle and took three seconds off her best time. Clive Chandler swam half a second quicker than his lifetime best in the 50m butterfly and Martin Heron did the same in the 50m freestyle.

The team finished the meet with one Gold medal (Alex McCrae, 100m Individual Medley), five Silver medals ( Clive Chandler, 50m & 100m Breaststroke, Alex McCrae, 100m Breaststroke & 50m Backstroke, Sarah Williams, 100m Freestyle) and one bronze (Sarah Williams 100m Backstroke) . The club came 13th out of 32 clubs which is an excellent achievement considering we took such a small team of swimmers to the meet.

Guernsey International Swim Meet 14th,15th and 16th March 2008

Five members of Redhill and Reigate Swimming Club Masters travelled over to Guernsey to attend the 17th International Swim Meet held on the island. It turned out to be very successful for two members who came away with medals for all the events they entered. Top female swimmer was Jenny Bass who was attending her first meeting in Guernsey. She came home with three silver and a bronze. Mens top swimmer was Martin Heron who was awarded a gold, silver and four bronze medals. Another medal winner was Tricia Wright who was delighted to achieve a silver in the 200 freestyle.

Denise Anderson made good progress this weekend by taking part in the 400 freestyle, an event she had not tried before. She did really well to compete over the weekend as she was suffering from a heavy cold. This was also the first time she had attended this Guernsey meet. Jo Read was pleased with her times but could only manage to come 4th in nearly all her events.

The meeting was as always very well run and the weekend ended by swimmers attending a dinner at a local hotel where those who had broken records were awarded prizes by the organizers.
